Materials
Jewelry is often more than something you simply wear. It can remind you of a place, a special moment, a milestone or something you want to keep close to your heart.
That is why at Riverstones, we believe it is important that our jewelry is not only beautiful, but also made with care. Throughout our collection, we work with a variety of materials, including gold plated stainless steel, gold plated brass, sterling silver and 14k gold.
On each product page, you can find the exact materials used for that particular piece of jewelry.
Gold plated jewelry
Gold plated means that a piece of jewelry is finished with a layer of real gold. Depending on the design, we use stainless steel or brass as the base material for our gold plated jewelry.
The base material is finished with a high-quality layer of 14k gold plating on either brass or stainless steel.
This finish gives each piece the warm appearance of gold while making it suitable for everyday wear.
As every design and material is different, we specify the exact plating and base material used on each individual product page.
Stainless steel
More and more pieces in our collection are made from high-quality stainless steel.
Stainless steel is a strong and durable material that is particularly suitable for jewelry you wear regularly. It retains its shape well and is less prone to discolouration than many other base metals.
For our gold-tone jewelry, the stainless steel is finished with a high-quality gold plating. Depending on the design, our silver-tone stainless steel jewelry may be finished with a silver-tone or rhodium plating.
This allows us to combine a strong and durable base with the refined look that defines Riverstones.
Sterling silver
Part of our silver jewelry is made from 925 sterling silver.
Sterling silver consists of 92.5% pure silver. The remaining 7.5% is made up of other metals that are added to strengthen the silver, as pure silver is naturally quite soft.
This alloy creates a material strong enough to make delicate and detailed jewelry while retaining the characteristic beauty of genuine silver.
Over time, sterling silver may darken slightly due to oxidation. This is a natural process and the jewelry can easily be polished to restore its shine.
Nickel
Our jewelry complies with European regulations regarding the use and release of nickel.
We believe it is important to carefully consider the materials used in our jewelry and continue to work closely with our manufacturers to improve quality and wearing comfort wherever possible.
14k recycled gold
For a selection of our designs, we work with 14k recycled gold.
These pieces are handmade in the Netherlands using gold that is certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC).

One of the advantages of gold is that it does not tarnish and can remain beautiful for many years. This makes these pieces particularly suitable for wearing for a lifetime and perhaps even pass them on to a future generation one day, so that they remain in the family or continue to be worn by a loved on.
By choosing recycled gold, we can also reduce the need for newly mined gold.
Personalization
Some pieces in our collection can be made even more personal with an engraving.
Think of a name, date, initials or a word that holds a special meaning for you. In this way, a piece of jewelry becomes more than something beautiful to wear; it becomes a tangible reminder of your own journey.
For the pieces that can be personalized, you can find the available engraving options on the product page.
Lab-grown diamonds and gemstones
For a selection of our designs, we use lab-grown diamonds and lab-grown gemstones.
A lab-grown diamond is created in a laboratory by recreating the natural process in which a diamond forms. The result has the same crystal structure and chemical properties as a natural diamond.
The natural growth process is similarly recreated under controlled conditions for other lab-grown gemstones.
For Riverstones, this is a beautiful way to incorporate special stones into our jewelry while continuing to look critically at the origin of the materials we use.
Sustainability at Riverstones
Sustainability within the jewelry industry is complex. That is why we prefer not to make big promises, but instead take thoughtful steps towards making better choices wherever we can.
We work with recycled 14k gold, are introducing more and more jewelry made from durable, hard-wearing stainless steel, and have been working with specialized ateliers for many years.
Part of our collection is produced in Thailand. We have personally visited our ateliers there and met the people who make our jewelry.
For our shipments, we also use cardboard packaging wherever possible, which can be reused or recycled.
We continue to look critically at our materials, production methods and packaging, always searching for ways to make Riverstones better.
How do you keep your jewelry beautiful for as long as possible?
Even high-quality jewelry stays at its best when treated with care.
We recommend removing your jewelry when:
-
showering or swimming;
-
exercising;
-
sleeping;
-
cleaning or doing the dishes.
Try to avoid direct contact with perfume, body lotion, hairspray and other cosmetics as much as possible. We therefore recommend putting on your jewelry as the final step when getting ready.
Gold plated jewelry may show signs of wear over time due to friction, moisture, perspiration and cosmetics. How quickly this happens varies from person to person and depends on how often and in what way the jewelry is worn.
Stainless steel is strong and less prone to discoloration, but when a piece is gold plated, the plating remains a finish that should be treated with care.
Sterling silver may darken over time due to oxidation. This is completely normal and can usually be easily polished with a special silver polishing cloth.
Jewelry for Every Journey
Riverstones was founded in 2013 out of a love for jewelry with a story.
Over the years, Riverstones has grown into a brand built around one clear idea: Jewelry for Every Journey.
Jewelry that reminds you of the places you have been, the moments that shape you and the milestones you reach along the way.
Sometimes it is a city that holds a piece of your heart. Sometimes it is a journey you never want to forget. Sometimes it marks a new beginning, a special person or simply serves as a reminder to yourself.
Places
Our City jewelry is inspired by cities and places that can hold a special meaning.
From Amsterdam’s canal houses and iconic Dutch landmarks to memories of travels further away: a small symbol can transport you back to a place that has become part of your story.
Memories
Jewelry can make memories tangible.
A holiday, an encounter, a meaningful chapter in your life or a small moment you never want to forget. With our charms and symbolic jewelry, you can create a collection that tells more and more of your own story.
Milestones
A new home. A birthday. A birth. Graduation. A new job. A big journey. A new chapter.
Some moments deserve a lasting reminder. A piece of jewelry can become a small symbol of how far you have come – and of everything that still lies ahead.
Inner Journey
Not every journey takes you to a different place.
Some journeys lead inward.
Within our Soul collection, you will find symbols that can represent strength, trust, balance, love and intuition. Small reminders to stay close to yourself, even in the rush of life.
Places. Memories. Milestones. Inner Journey.
Whatever your story is, carry it close to you.
