I'd like to share the beautiful story below, which I received in an email a few weeks ago, with you. With the permission of the person who sent it, of course. Read here how the city of Utrecht held a special place in someone's heart and forged a bond between two strangers:

Through a volunteer project run by the municipality of Utrecht, I met a woman. She was 89 years old at the time . She was a true Utrecht native who had lived in the same neighborhood her whole life. She grew up there and raised her family there. She was now a widow and living alone. I helped her with her finances and came over for coffee twice a month to process her mail.

During the coronavirus pandemic, she unfortunately broke her hip, forcing her to move to a care facility. Together with her downstairs neighbor Leontien, whom I'd gotten to know better and better, I arranged the move and cleared out her house, where she'd lived for 81 years.

During the years she spent there, Leontien and I took care of her.
The lady had little or no further contacts.

Every year on her birthday in September, the fanfare band De Bazuin would perform a serenade. It was a moment she eagerly anticipated. They always played the song "Als ik boven op de Dom sta," which she would sing along to at the top of her lungs. She passed away in early October 2024.

She turned 103!

Leontien and I still regularly go out for dinner together or to a terrace to catch up. We've developed a beautiful friendship through it. In memory of this special woman who connected us, we both wear the Dom necklace .
